Two Teens Sentenced to Life for Brutal Sheffield Machete Murder
Two Sheffield teenagers have been locked up for life after stabbing a 19-year-old to death on a stranger’s doorstep.
Chased, Stabbed and Left to Die
Thomas Hardiman and Xander Howarth, both 18, were found guilty earlier this month of murdering Adam Abdul-Basit in a savage attack on Smelter Wood Road, Woodhouse, Sheffield. The pair were just 17 when they chased Adam into a stranger’s front garden and attacked him with a machete.
Adam fought desperately to escape but suffered a deadly 15cm stab wound to his chest. He was left bleeding out on the doorstep on 8 May and died despite emergency efforts to save him.
Life Sentences and a Tough Warning
After a 12-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court, Hardiman of Edenhall Road and Howarth of 1 Park View were sentenced to life with a minimum of 19 years behind bars on 22 December. They had denied murder but were convicted of the brutal killing.
The judge said a “lengthy sentence” was necessary to reflect the “scourge of knife crime” and send a clear message.
Police Condemn Cowardly Acts
“My thoughts go out to Adam’s family and friends after such a brutal and senseless murder,” said Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge.
“This sentence won’t bring Adam back, but we hope it offers some closure to those grieving. Hardiman and Howarth killed Adam in a barbaric fashion and left him to die alone. Denying the crime only added insult to injury by forcing loved ones through a lengthy trial.
“Knife crime won’t be tolerated in our communities. We are pleased the sentence reflects the seriousness of their actions.”
