Burglar Preys on 80-Year-Old, Gets 18 Months Behind Bars
Darryl Smith, a sneaky burglar from Berecroft in Harlow, has been slammed with an 18-month prison sentence for tricking an elderly man in his 80s. Smith knocked on the victim’s door, claiming he had been assaulted. The kind-hearted pensioner let him in to use the bathroom and change clothes – but Smith had other plans.
Steals Wallet and Bank Cards, Leaves Victim Devastated
While inside, Smith pinched the man’s wallet and bank cards before making a quick getaway. His spree didn’t last long, though. Fingerprints from the victim’s home and CCTV footage from shops where Smith used the stolen cards helped police track him down.
Admits Guilt and Faces Justice
Smith was charged with burglary, two counts of fraud, and possession of a Class B drug on September 14, 2023. In court on January 12, 2024, he pleaded guilty to all charges and was locked up for 18 months.
“The custodial sentence for this crime reflects the severe impact burglary can have on victims, regardless of the monetary value of the stolen items,” said Detective Inspector Karen Knibbs.
“Smith took advantage of his victim’s kind nature, deceiving him to gain entry and burgle his home. The dedication of our team ensured that Smith had no choice but to admit guilt, sparing his victim the ordeal of a trial.”
