Nurse Suspended After Caught Stealing Prescription Anaesthetic – UKNIP

A nurse at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Olufemi Majaro, has been suspended after being caught stealing a prescription anaesthetic, a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing revealed.

Mr Majaro was confronted by a colleague who observed him placing a white paper bag into his own bag. Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain two unused bottles of Sevoflurane, a prescription-only anaesthetic.

Initially, Mr Majaro admitted wrongdoing and apologized to his colleague, claiming he found the medication in the corridor and intended to return it to the operating theatre. However, he later confessed that he had planned to take the Sevoflurane to give to another hospital where he hoped to secure more shifts.

The NMC panel found Mr Majaro’s explanation implausible, questioning how he could coincidentally find the exact drug needed by another hospital in a paper bag in the corridor of his workplace.

In light of the incident, the NMC panel decided on Friday, February 8, 2024, to suspend Mr. Majaro from practice for a period of nine months.

Mr Majaro had been employed as an agency-registered scrub nurse by Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust for approximately three years before the incident occurred on November 4, 2022.
