Worthing Council has expressed its deep frustration over the repeated acts of vandalism and theft targeting vital life-saving equipment around Brooklands Lake. In a concerning trend, throwlines, essential for emergency rescues, have been found damaged or missing, potentially compromising the safety of visitors in distress.
The issue was brought to light by the council’s parks team, which noted that the Brooklands throwlines – crucial in emergency situations for individuals struggling in water – have been tampered with. This vandalism not only endangers lives but has also incurred a significant financial cost to the community, with replacements nearing £2,000 in a short span.
Brooklands Park, alongside various coastal locations, is equipped with nine throwlines and two life rings, strategically placed to aid in rescue efforts. However, these reckless acts of vandalism and theft have left the equipment either faulty or completely absent when most needed.
In response to these incidents, Worthing Council is urging the public to assist by reporting any suspicious activities or information related to the vandalism to Sussex Police. Routine inspections by the Coastal Office team and the parks team at Brooklands are part of ongoing efforts to ensure the availability and condition of the life-saving apparatus.
