30-Year-Old Mystery: Young Man Found Dead on Railway Embankment
British Transport Police have reissued a heartfelt appeal to crack the decades-old case of a young man found dead in 1991. His body was discovered hanging from a tree on a railway embankment just south of Ouse Valley Viaduct, between Balcombe and Haywards Heath.
Unidentified Man’s Haunting Details
The victim, a white male aged 19-25, was about 5ft 10in and weighed 80kg. He had dark brown curly hair and brown eyes. Despite the tragic scene, his identity remains unknown, leaving the community with an unsettling cold case.
Fresh Hope with New E-Fit Image
Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn has released an e-fit to jog memories and encourage tips. He lamented the man’s lonely fate: dying with no known family or friends to mourn him.
Clues from the Scene: What He Carried
- Blue denim jacket and mauve polo neck jumper
- Grey shirt, blue T-shirt, white socks, brown walking shoes
- Red and blue waterproof jacket
- Personal stereo and two Beverley Craven tapes
- Brown wallet and blue Mickey Mouse rucksack
- 20 Kool cigarettes, £52 cash, tourist map of London
- Woolwich Building Society pen
The combination of these items offers a snapshot into his life – but they haven’t cracked his identity yet.
Still No Name, Still No Closure
He is buried at St Peter’s Church in Ardingly. The police urge anyone with even the smallest clue to come forward.
“We want to give a name to the unknown and finally bring peace to a soul that has remained nameless for far too long,” said Chief Inspector Blackburn.
