eBay Ditches Fees for Pre-Owned Clothes to Slash Fashion Waste
In a bold move to fight fashion waste, eBay is wiping out selling fees on all pre-owned clothing from April 8. The aim? To boost the resale of second-hand fashion, stop piles of clothes heading to landfill, and champion a greener, circular economy.
What’s Free and What’s Not?
The fee-free policy covers all second-hand clothes—even brand-new items with tags. But don’t get too excited about trainers, watches, handbags, or jewellery; fees still apply there. Sellers can also list older preloved fashion items without paying fees, making it cheaper and easier to offload unwanted clothes.
Brits Sitting on £400+ of Unworn Clothes
A recent eBay survey revealed shocking stats: 70% of Brits use half or less of their wardrobe regularly, and 92% haven’t worn certain clothes in over a year. Yet only 25% bother selling their unwanted garments. The average wardrobe hoards over £400 worth of unused threads!
Kirsty Keoghan, eBay’s Global Fashion Boss, said: “Free fashion selling has come at the right time for a nation sitting on billions of pounds worth of unwanted clothes.”
She added that AI tools will help sellers list their items faster and easier, encouraging more of us to join the resale revolution.
Driving Toward a Sustainable Fashion Future
Last year alone, eBay helped divert more than 1.6 million kg of clothing waste from landfills. Now, by scrapping fees on preloved fashion, they’re pushing even further towards a greener industry.
Other selling fees and final value fee deductions remain as usual for different categories and listings beyond the standard 1,000 free monthly posts. Plus, eBay is ramping up shopping perks with new “123 deals” and real-time purchase options, promising a slicker buyer experience.
This latest scheme cements eBay’s role as a leader in sustainable, affordable fashion, proving that shopping second-hand can be both eco-friendly and wallet-friendly.
