Humberside Police have nominated PC Richard Broad, a student officer still in his initial learning period, for the prestigious national Police Bravery Awards 2024. PC Broad’s nomination comes in recognition of his remarkable courage and quick thinking when faced with a dangerous armed suspect.
The incident unfolded during a routine patrol of Bridlington seafront, where PC Broad and his tutor constable were alerted by CCTV operators to two individuals suspected of drug dealing. As they approached the suspects to conduct a stop and search, one fled on foot, leaving PC Broad alone with the second individual.
Despite being inexperienced and not yet signed off for independent patrol, PC Broad remained composed. However, the situation escalated rapidly when the suspect suddenly turned violent, shoving PC Broad and attempting to flee.
Undeterred, PC Broad pursued the suspect, who then brandished a handgun. Showing exceptional bravery, PC Broad confronted the armed suspect, ordering him to drop the weapon and get on the ground. Without hesitation, PC Broad continued to engage with the suspect, successfully disarming and subduing him single-handedly.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the suspect was linked to an out-of-town gang involved in drug dealing and violence.
Lee Sims, Chair of the Humberside Police Federation, praised PC Broad’s courage, highlighting his bravery in confronting an armed criminal despite his limited experience. Chief Constable Paul Anderson also commended PC Broad, emphasizing his selfless dedication to public safety and acknowledging the exceptional bravery displayed, especially considering his status as a student officer.
PC Richard Broad’s nomination for the Police Bravery Awards serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to upholding the law and protecting the community, even in the face of grave danger. His actions reflect the highest ideals of police service and exemplify the bravery and professionalism of Humberside Police officers.
