Christmas Night Drama: Armed Poachers Nabbed on Titsey Hill

Armed Poachers Busted While Most Slept

While families settled down for Christmas Day, Surrey Police were on high alert near Titsey Hill in Oxted. Just before midnight on December 25th, officers caught two armed poachers red-handed. One man was spotted moving sneakily through the woods with a large sack—not Santa’s gifts. He was accompanied by a second individual carrying a firearm.

Swift Armed Response and Air Support

The tense situation triggered a rapid response from Surrey Police’s armed officers, expertly guided by the National Police Air Service. Thanks to flawless teamwork, police tracked and stopped the suspects in a daring armed halt.

Poachers Caught with Dead Pheasants and Air Rifle

After their arrest, the men—Anas Abdulla Azizi, 21, from Brighton, and Sirwan Muhammad Salih, 41, from Derby—were searched. Officers found an air rifle and a sack full of dead pheasants. Both pleaded guilty to night poaching offenses on May 21 at Guildford Crown Court and were ordered to pay compensation.

Night Poaching: A Dangerous, Costly Crime

Night poaching, often involving lights and guns, is not just illegal but dangerous for gamekeepers and landowners. Confrontations with armed offenders can lead to serious risk and heavy financial losses. Surrey Police urge anyone with suspicions of poaching to call 999 immediately.

This swift action underlines the crucial role of vigilance and prompt police response in protecting wildlife and local livelihoods.
