Huddersfield Teen Jailed for Halifax Double Murder

A 19-year-old from Kirklees was locked up for life after stabbing two young men to death in Halifax town centre. Rashane Douglas, of Jade Place, Huddersfield, was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 28 years at Bradford Crown Court on 4 June. He was convicted of murdering 19-year-old Haidar Shah and 21-year-old Joshua Clark in the early hours of 1 October last year.

Nightclub Violence Leaves Two Dead, One Seriously Injured

Police were called at 3:48am to reports of an attack outside a nightclub on Commercial Street. Both Haidar and Joshua were rushed to hospital but sadly later died from their injuries. A third teenager, aged 18, was also hospitalised with serious wounds but survived after receiving treatment.

Douglas handed himself in to Huddersfield Police Station later the same day. He was charged on 4 October with two counts of murder, attempted murder, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Convictions and Sentences

Douglas denied the charges but was found guilty of the two murders during a three-week trial that ended on 12 March. While acquitted of attempted murder, he was convicted of wounding with intent for the attack on the 18-year-old.

Another Huddersfield teen, 18-year-old Yaseen Iqbal, was convicted of assisting Douglas and sentenced to 12 months in a Young Offenders Institution.

Families Mourn and Police Issue Warning on Knife Crime

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Matt Holdsworth of West Yorkshire Police said: “While today’s sentence won’t bring Haidar and Josh back, we hope it brings some comfort knowing Douglas has faced justice. This tragic case highlights the devastating human cost of knife crime and serves as a stark warning to others.”

Haidar’s family spoke of their heartbreak. His mother Yasmin said: “No words can express the pain of losing my beautiful son. I am destroyed, confused, and heartbroken. No mother should have to bury her child.”

His sister Marium added: “Haidar was the kindest, most loving lad. He had big dreams and just wanted to live life to the fullest. Losing him feels like losing a part of ourselves.”

Haidar’s older brother Shahzerb said: “Seeing my brother take his last breath affects me deeply. I want to hug him and apologise but that chance was cruelly taken away. The pain in my mother’s eyes says it all.”

Joshua’s mother Rachel also shared her sorrow: “Josh was not just my son, but my best friend. Life felt full with him in it. Now it’s just emptiness. His life was cruelly ripped away by a brutal killer. I have lost my identity as a mother.”

The families thanked the good samaritans who helped at the scene, the paramedics, hospital staff, and West Yorkshire Police for their tireless efforts. They also praised the prosecution and jury for securing justice against the “worthless and dangerous criminal.”

Rashane Douglas, 19, will serve at least 28 years behind bars for the murders of Haidar Shah and Joshua Clark.
