Mo Farah Calls on UK Kids to Get Moving for National School Sports Week

With National School Sports Week just days away, Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah is urging youngsters across the UK to get up and active. The annual event, powered by Sports Direct’s Monster Kickabout, aims to inspire children and teens to clock 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

Alarm as Awareness of Activity Guidelines Plummets

New findings from the Youth Sport Trust reveal a worrying drop in awareness among parents and teachers about official activity recommendations for children. Less than a third of parents now know kids should do 60 minutes of exercise daily, down from 43% last year. Teachers are no better, with awareness slipping from 35% to 30%.

Activity Levels Flatline – Less Than Half Kids Meeting Targets

The decline in awareness is bad news given kids’ activity levels have stalled. According to Sport England’s Active Lives Survey, only 47% of 5-to-18-year-olds meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise—a figure unchanged from last year.

National School Sports Week 2024: “60 Active Minutes” Campaign

The Youth Sport Trust has launched this year’s theme, “60 Active Minutes,” to tackle this sport slump head-on. CEO Ali Oliver stresses the vital role schools and parents play in motivating children to move more and embrace a healthier lifestyle.

Monster Kickabout and EURO 2024 Boost the Buzz

National School Sports Week kicks off alongside the men’s EURO 2024 football tournament—perfect timing to get kids excited about sport. Sports Direct’s Monster Kickabout is mixing football with fun games like foot tennis and football mini-golf to make exercise irresistible.

Sir Mo Farah, proud National School Sports Champion, is pumped for the week ahead. He believes events like the EUROs and the Olympics will light a fire under young people, inspiring them to get active.

Schools, families, and organisations are encouraged to join in, grab free resources, and help promote physical health across the nation.
