Hundreds of passengers found themselves trapped on a broken-down Amtrak train for hours, left to fend for themselves, many missing onward travel connections and flights.
The chaos began when a train horn, a mandatory safety feature, failed, leading to the breakdown of the Silver Service 92, which was travelling from Miami to New York. The train, which departed on the morning of Friday, June 21, has been stranded just outside Wake, North Carolina, for the past four hours.
Passengers, many of whom had already been on board for 12 hours, some passengers were provided with bottles of water and sweet packs by the train crew as drivers and engineers attempted to resolve the issue. Despite these efforts, the train remains inoperable, and the service, which was due to arrive in New York at around 7 pm on Saturday, remains stuck.
Amtrak has advised affected passengers to call customer relations on Monday for further assistance. The call centre staff we reached out to mentioned that managers would meet the train and attempt to assist customers upon their eventual arrival.
An official statement from Amtrak’s press office is awaited as the situation continues to unfold an hour of hours spokeswoman named Lady refused to comment further.
Passengers and their families are left in limbo, hoping for a swift resolution to this frustrating ordeal.
