Woman Jailed for Stabbing Partner to Death Just Before Christmas
A woman from Ilkeston has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison after fatally stabbing her partner during a heated Christmas argument.
Tragic Death on Stamford Street
Wayne Sibley, 45, died at his home on Stamford Street, Ilkeston, on Tuesday 19 December 2023. A single stab wound severed his femoral artery, causing him to bleed out at the scene.
Regan Martin, 48, was arrested shortly after the incident. She admitted to stabbing Mr Sibley during an argument but claimed she didn’t intend to kill him.
Trial Sees Murder Charge Dropped to Manslaughter
Martin was charged with murder. However, during the trial at Derby Crown Court last month, a jury found her not guilty of murder. The prosecution accepted her earlier manslaughter plea in relation to Mr Sibley’s death.
Today, the same court handed down a prison sentence of seven and a half years.
Investigation Reveals Chaotic Lifestyle
“Regan Martin led a chaotic lifestyle – being both a heavy drug taker and a user of alcohol,” said Detective Inspector Maria Pleace, who led the investigation.
“On the day of Wayne’s death, Martin had taken heroin and drunk strong cider. During an argument, she grabbed a knife and stabbed him.”
“The wound to Wayne’s leg cut through his femoral artery. Despite the best efforts of officers and paramedics, he died at the scene.”
“Martin showed total disregard for Wayne’s safety by brandishing a knife and stabbing him, leading to this tragic outcome.”
“She will have to live with the knowledge that she killed Wayne and bears responsibility for his death for life.”
“My thoughts are with Wayne Sibley’s family and friends. They lost a loved one in unnecessary circumstances. I thank them for their dignity throughout the investigation and court proceedings.”
