Rail fare hike slashed to shield passengers from soaring inflation
Transport Secretary Holds the Line
The upcoming rise in rail fares will be kept well below inflation, Transport Secretary Mark Harper confirms. The move aims to ease the pinch on hard-up passengers.
Balancing Act Between Passengers and Taxpayers
“I’m keeping the increase well below inflation to lessen the impact on passengers,” Harper said. “We do not want to add to the problem,” he added, referring to the UK’s broader inflation crisis.
He insists this approach strikes a fair balance. “This strikes a reasonable balance between the passengers who use our trains and the taxpayers who help pay for them,” Harper explained.
