Interpol Nabbed Notorious Human Trafficker Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam
Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam, one of the world’s most wanted human traffickers, has finally been arrested. The Eritrean fugitive was hunted by both Ethiopia and the Netherlands under Interpol Red Notices for migrant smuggling, human trafficking, kidnapping, extortion, and murder of East African migrants.
International Task Force Cracked the Case
On Interpol’s radar since 2019, Habtemariam is believed to have smuggled and exploited thousands. A March 2022 intel-led task force, including Ethiopia, Sudan, the Netherlands, UAE, Europol, and African Union partners, worked relentlessly to track him down.
“Officers explored analytical gaps, progressively closing in on the fugitive and his associates,” the task force revealed. This massive collaboration uncovered money laundering linked to Habtemariam’s network, extending all the way to Sudan.
Major Blow to Smuggling Route to Europe
Habtemariam’s capture is a huge win, striking at a key smuggling route funneling migrants towards Europe. It safeguards thousands from falling prey to his ruthless crime ring.
Brigadier Saeed Abdullah al Suwaidi, UAE’s Federal Anti-Narcotics Director General, hailed the efforts: “Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of our police officers, the world’s most wanted human trafficker will no longer commit his despicable actions. The UAE remains committed to protecting vulnerable communities.”
Stefan Schrander from the Dutch Royal Marechaussee added, “He had been on our National Most Wanted List since October 2021. This successful international cooperation – coordinated through Interpol – brought him to justice. He will face charges for smuggling thousands under violent, degrading conditions.”
Demelash Gebremichael, Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner General, praised the cross-border effort: “This tremendous work led to the arrest of an international criminal sentenced to life in prison in Ethiopia. It’s a notable success.”
Interpol’s Stephen Kavanagh summed it up: “This arrest proves what global cooperation can achieve. We’re more determined than ever to dismantle this vicious smuggling ring that exploits those seeking a better life.”
