Warning Over Dodgy Traders Ripping Off Homeowners
A trader who promised repairs at a Palmbeach Avenue home has allegedly taken cash and done a runner—leaving the house unsafe. The victim claims the work was never finished, and when they raised concerns, the trader admitted he couldn’t fix it.
Sneaky Salesmen and Shady Deals in Sellindge and Hythe
On 20 July, Sellindge locals reported two men selling cleaning services door-to-door, refusing to leave when turned down. Just days later in Hythe’s Hillside Street, a resident paid for equipment installation that never happened. Contact with the supposed installer revealed the company hadn’t received any payment, and the man won’t return the cash or respond.
Police Sound Alarm: Be Wary of Doorstep Dealers
Inspector James Wyles from Folkestone’s Community Safety Unit warned:
“While officers investigate these cases, I urge residents to be careful about who they let into their homes. Always ask for ID. If you’re unsure about a caller, ask them to leave and come back when you’ve got someone with you. Look out for your neighbours and report anything suspicious straight away by calling 101 or dial 999 if a crime is in progress.”
Your Guide to Dodging Doorstep Fraudsters
- Fraudsters often offer unnecessary or shoddy services like driveway cleaning, gardening, or gutter repairs.
- They may demand cash upfront and then vanish without doing the job.
- Always refuse unsolicited repair or maintenance offers at your door.
- If pressured, tell them to leave. If they don’t, call the police immediately on 999.
- Never accompany a trader to the bank or cash point—legitimate workers won’t ask.
- Use reputable traders with KCC Trading Standards approval, often in partnership with Checkatrade.
- Get quotes in writing and verify the company they claim to represent.
