Gladiators Legend John Anderson Dies Aged 92

John Anderson, the iconic referee known for his booming “Contender ready! Gladiator ready!” calls on the hit 1990s TV show Gladiators, has died aged 92. The Glaswegian passed away in the early hours of Sunday, leaving a lasting legacy in both entertainment and athletics coaching.

From Track Coach to TV Star

Before becoming a household name on television, Anderson was a top-class track and field coach. He played a pivotal role in the careers of multiple Olympians, including David Moorcroft, who smashed the 5,000m world record in 1982. Other star athletes he mentored included Judy Simpson, Sheila Carey, and Liz McColgan – who grabbed Olympic silver in the 10,000m at Seoul 1988.

“John turned water into wine. He just got the best out of people. I’m certain I would never have been a decent athlete without him,” said Moorcroft. “He took a shy kid and made him believe in himself.”

Coaching Career Spanning Decades

Anderson’s remarkable coaching career stretched over several decades. He was among the first National Coaches for the Amateur Athletic Association of England and had the rare honour of coaching at least one Olympian at every Summer Games from 1964 through 2000. Over the years, he worked with over 170 Team GB athletes.

Final Years and Lasting Tributes

After Gladiators wrapped up in 2000, Anderson stepped back when the show briefly returned in 2008, focusing once again on athletics. Tributes have flooded in from the sports and entertainment worlds, celebrating Anderson’s rare dual legacy: a charismatic TV presence who also shaped generations of British athletes.

John Anderson’s death marks the end of an era — but his impact on sport and screen will not be forgotten.
