Firefighters from Sidcup, Bexley, and Plumstead Fire Stations, backed by Kent Fire & Rescue Service, fought the flames hard. They managed to bring the fire under control by 3.57pm, preventing further damage.

Scorching Heat Fuels Fire Risk

Temperatures topping 20°C hit London on the same day, raising the risk of such grass fires. The London Fire Brigade has urged the public to follow safety advice during warm weather to protect lives and property.

Barbecue Warning from London Fire Brigade

“We know many Londoners will want to enjoy the nice weather by visiting a park or open space,” said Craig Carter, London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner for Prevention and Protection. “However, we’re asking people not to take disposable barbecues with them as they can cause grass fires, especially in hot weather when the ground is dry. These fires are unpredictable and can spread rapidly, causing significant damage.”

Carter also cautioned against barbecuing on balconies: “Balconies often have combustible materials nearby, posing a fire risk to both you and other residents.”

He added, “If you are having a barbecue, never leave it unattended and be careful where it’s positioned. Aim for level ground and keep barbecues well away from anything flammable like sheds, fences, trees, or tents.”

With the summer heatwave continuing, Londoners are being urged to stay fire-safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly.
