Roofer Jailed for Violent Standoff with Police at Far-Right Whitehall Rally
Alfie Arrowsmith, 28, a roofer from Crayford, has been locked up for 16 months after aggressively confronting police during a far-right protest in Whitehall. The court heard he pleaded guilty to violent disorder following the “Enough is Enough” rally near Downing Street on July 31.
Fighting Words and Fiery Showdown with Cops
Video footage revealed Arrowsmith taunting officers with shouts like “Come on then” and “Let’s have it,” while repeatedly pushing and leaning into police lines. The rowdy crowd hurled bottles and cans, sparking violent clashes. The protest, organised by Daniel Thomas, quickly turned ugly – despite police orders to keep demonstrators contained.
Claims of a Peaceful Start Fall Flat
Defence lawyer Stephen Nelson told the court Arrowsmith thought he was joining a peaceful protest. Nelson painted a picture of a hardworking man without previous convictions, who’d been drinking with friends after a shift at The Ritz hotel before attending the demo. Arrowsmith is also the sole carer for his wheelchair-bound mum, who suffered a stroke.
Judge Unmoved by Sob Stories
Judge Vanessa Baraitser slammed these claims, saying Arrowsmith “deliberately positioned himself at the front” and encouraged others to confront police. She warned he likely believed the crowd would protect him from consequences. As Arrowsmith was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court, he blew kisses to his tearful girlfriend and mother in the courtroom. The judge insisted harsh jail time was necessary, declaring, “Appropriate punishment can only be achieved by immediate custody.”
