Swifties rack up more than 400,000 tube journeys as Taylor hits town

Taylor Swift’s record-breaking The Eras Tour performances at Wembley Stadium this August have sparked a massive surge in Tube journeys, with more than 400,000 fans flocking to the venue. Over the course of five performances, Wembley Park station saw more than 441,000 recorded entries and exits between Thursday, August 15, and Saturday, August 17, according to data from Transport for London (TfL).

The Jubilee and Metropolitan line station experienced its busiest days of the year, as thousands of Swifties descended upon the capital to witness the global superstar perform. London Mayor Sadiq Khan hailed the events as part of a “spectacular summer” of concerts that reinforced London’s status as the “music capital of the world.

“It’s a huge honour that Taylor Swift chose to perform more nights of her record-breaking The Eras Tour in London than any other city,” Khan said. “Her eight concerts at Wembley Stadium have seen nearly 700,000 Swifties travel from all corners of the world to be here, boosting our economy and proving that London is truly the music capital of the world. I’d also like to thank the police and security staff in London for all their work in making sure the events went ahead safely.”

TfL’s data further revealed that Wembley Park experienced its highest number of entries and exits in a single day during Swift’s previous tour dates in June, with 167,237 on Friday, June 21, and 153,761 on Saturday, June 22.

Beyond Taylor Swift’s concerts, London has seen hundreds of thousands of concert-goers heading to events across the city this summer. Stratford station experienced its busiest days of the year during the Foo Fighters’ performances at the Olympic Park’s London Stadium in June, with 225,785 and 229,952 entries and exits on June 20 and 22, respectively.

Pudding Mill Lane DLR station also reported higher levels of traffic due to the ongoing success of the ABBA Voyage concert, which continues to draw large crowds more than two years after its debut.

London’s summer music calendar has been packed with major events, including performances by Green Day and Bruce Springsteen at Wembley Stadium, Burna Boy at the London Stadium, and Nicki Minaj, 21 Savage, and Doja Cat at Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park. Other highlights include Kylie Minogue, SZA, and Stray Kids at BST Hyde Park.

Laura Citron, CEO of VisitLondon.com, noted the significant impact music tourism has had on the capital. “Music is a huge tourism driver for London, and this summer has been absolutely massive,” she said. “Taylor Swift’s record-breaking London shows have seen hotel searches up as much as four times higher than 2023 as Swifties entered the capital. Beyond London’s music scene, there’s a fantastic array of festivals, parades, and lush parks for visitors to enjoy these next few weeks.”

As London continues to host world-class music and cultural events, the city’s transport network is set to play a crucial role in supporting the influx of visitors from across the globe.
