People Smuggler Jailed After Cramming Seven Migrants into Tin Can Van
A ruthless people smuggler has been convicted for endangering seven migrants by locking them in an airless, tiny compartment in his lorry. Anas Al Mustafa, 43, was caught after ferry staff at Newhaven heard desperate cries for help from inside his van on February 15, 2024.
Seven Migrants Hidden in Stifling Van Space
Mustafa booked a ferry from Dieppe to Newhaven. When the ferry docked, staff discovered six men and one woman trapped in a hidden 2-metre-wide space at the back of his van, accessible only through a 22-inch hole. The migrants were packed so tightly they couldn’t move their arms and were suffering severe oxygen deprivation and intense heat.
They were rushed to hospital with heat exhaustion after the ferry crew’s quick response. Their frantic banging and cries saved their lives.
Clean-Up Attempt and Dark Past
Police arrested Mustafa on the spot. He was seen hurriedly deleting files from his mobile phone, trying—and failing—to cover his tracks. The court also heard Mustafa had a history of being stopped for smuggling shisha and cigarettes into the UK.
Officials Slam Smuggler’s ‘Appalling’ Crime
Dame Angela Eagle, Minister for Border Security and Asylum, blasted Mustafa’s actions: “This appalling incident could have easily ended in tragedy. Everyone packed inside this criminal’s van is incredibly lucky to still be alive. We are sending a clear message that we will not tolerate this life-threatening activity.”
Chris Foster, Deputy Director of Home Office Criminal and Financial Investigations, warned: “This conviction exposes the brutal lengths evil people smugglers will go for cash. Seven lives were risked in a boiling, suffocating van with no fresh air.”
Lauren Doshi, Specialist Prosecutor for the CPS, added: “Much effort went into adapting the van to hide people in dangerously life-threatening conditions.”
The Crown Prosecution Service pledged to keep hunting down smugglers and seize any criminal profits.
Victory for Law Enforcement Against Human Trafficking
Mustafa’s conviction sends a sharp warning to the criminal gangs behind illegal immigration. Authorities vow to crack down harder on this brutal and exploitative trade, protecting vulnerable migrants from such horrors.
