A major traffic accident in Croydon late last night (September 1) has left a man hospitalized and a key road closed as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:25 pm at the junction of London Road and Winterbourne Road in Thornton Heath. Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service and the Metropolitan Police, quickly responded to the scene after receiving reports of a serious road traffic collision.
A man, who was found injured at the scene, was treated by paramedics before being rushed to a nearby hospital. The extent of his injuries remains unclear as authorities have yet to provide an update on his condition.
The crash has resulted in the closure of London Road in both directions, causing significant disruption. The affected section of the road runs between the Lidl supermarket and Warwick Road, a busy area connecting Norbury and Thornton Heath. As a result, London buses 60 and 109 are currently being diverted.
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service provided details on their response: “We were called at 10:26 pm on Sunday, September 1, to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of London Road and Winterbourne Road, Thornton Heath. We sent resources to the scene, including ambulance crews and a paramedic in a fast-response car. Our crews treated a male at the scene before taking him to hospital.”
The Metropolitan Police have been contacted for further information, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
Residents and motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while the road closure remains in effect. Authorities are working to reopen the road as soon as possible, but it is currently unknown how long the closure will last.
