Ex-Met Police Officer Faces Multiple Rape and Sexual Assault Charges
A former Metropolitan Police officer, Mark Tyrrell, 55, has been hit with a slew of serious charges after an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Tyrrell was charged on Tuesday, 13 August, via postal requisition with numerous criminal offences including:
- Two counts of rape
- Eleven counts of sexual assault
- Four counts of sexual assault by penetration
- Three counts of perverting the course of justice
- One count of misconduct in public office
High-Ranking Protector Turned Accused
Tyrrell served as a police constable with the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command — the elite unit guarding key UK figures and locations. He retired on 8 September 2023, following his arrest in April while still a serving officer.
The arrest, part of an internal probe by the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards, led to Tyrrell’s immediate suspension. The IOPC took over the investigation on 24 April 2023, declaring it an independent inquiry.
Next Stop: Westminster Magistrates’ Court
Tyrrell is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 4 September to respond to the charges. The case has sent shockwaves through the Met, raising grave concerns about conduct within one of the country’s most sensitive police units.
Both the Metropolitan Police and the IOPC have pledged to uphold strict standards and deal firmly with any breaches of the law by officers entrusted with public safety.
Developing Story
As the trial unfolds, further updates will be provided. Tyrrell’s charges come amid ongoing scrutiny over police behaviour and underscore the importance of accountability at the highest levels.
