UK and Switzerland Face Surge in Scorching Hot Days, Study Warns
A shocking new study reveals that the UK and Switzerland are set to suffer the biggest jump in uncomfortably hot days worldwide. Homes across these nations – and much of northern Europe – are dangerously unprepared, thanks to designs focused on keeping heat in rather than out.
Why Northern Europe Is in Trouble
Lead researcher Dr Nicole Miranda from Oxford University warns even a slight rise in temperatures will cause a dramatic spike in unbearably hot spells. This means countries like the UK will face greater pressure to ramp up cooling solutions.
What Counts as an ‘Uncomfortably Hot Day’?
The study uses a strict scientific yardstick for ‘uncomfortably hot days,’ defining them as 24-hour periods where the average temperature hits 18°C or higher. Peak temperatures during these times can soar past 25°C, 30°C, or even more, making life unbearable without cooling.
Global Warming Set to Hit 2°C Sooner Than Expected
The research assumes a 2°C global temperature rise — a grim milestone that looks likely as the 1.5°C target slips away, possibly as soon as 2027. According to Climate Action Tracker, the world could breach 2°C by mid-century and may hit 2.7°C by 2100 under current policies.
