2.7 Million UK Drivers Racked Up Points on Their Licences
Shocking new figures reveal that over 2.7 million drivers across England, Scotland, and Wales have at least three penalty points on their licences. These points come from a range of motoring offences that could soon cost many their driving privileges.
Double Trouble: How 12 Points Can End Your Licence
Mike Potter, CEO of DriveElectric, warns that hitting the dreaded 12-point mark within three years can lead to a ban. And that’s not all – penalty points spike your insurance premiums, meaning your wallet takes a hit too.
Biggest Offences Behind Maximum Points
- Driving over alcohol or drug limits: Up to 11 points
- Causing death or injury while unlicensed, uninsured, or disqualified: Up to 11 points
- Causing death by careless driving or culpable homicide: Up to 11 points
- Dangerous driving or illegal motor racing on public roads: Up to 11 points
- Failing to stop after an accident: Up to 10 points
- Careless or inconsiderate driving: Up to 9 points
- Driving an uninsured vehicle: Up to 8 points
Other serious slip-ups include driving while disqualified, speeding, or using a mobile phone behind the wheel – each can rack up six points.
Smaller Offences That Still Cost You
Faulty brakes, bald tyres, steering issues, or breaching passenger limits can earn drivers three points. Ignoring pedestrian crossings or driving with uncorrected poor eyesight hits the tally with the same penalty.
How to Check Your Points and What Happens Next
Stay in the know by checking your penalty points online via the Government’s website. You’ll need your driving licence number, national insurance number, and postcode. Remember, points stick around for three years, but the offence itself can stay on your record for up to 11 years – potentially haunting your motoring history.
