A new fleet of electric buses is set to be introduced as part of a shuttle bus service for the upcoming Silvertown Tunnel in Greenwich. The tunnel, which is currently under construction and expected to be completed by 2025, will link Greenwich Peninsula with east London.
The 1.4km tunnel aims to reduce congestion at the heavily trafficked Blackwall Tunnel, and the new shuttle bus service will feature a dedicated bus lane to facilitate smoother travel across the Thames.
Stagecoach, the UK’s largest bus and coach operator, will supply electric vehicles, which are designed to help tackle both congestion and air pollution in the capital. The environmentally friendly buses will also offer space for cyclists to bring their bikes on board and will provide a high-frequency service for commuters.
Paul Lynch, Managing Director for Stagecoach London, praised the initiative, saying: “It is fantastic that Stagecoach can help expand the ways the local community connect to what matters most to them. This new addition to our network will build on our ambitions for a thriving local bus network with sustainability at its core.”
The new service represents a significant step towards more sustainable transport options in London, aligning with the city’s broader environmental goals.
