Three Dead in Suspected Carbon Monoxide Leak at Dorset Care Home
Tragedy struck early this morning at Gainsborough Care Home in Swanage, Dorset, where three people are believed to have died from a suspected carbon monoxide leak. Emergency services launched a major response, rushing to the scene after receiving the first call at 5:20am.
Massive Emergency Response and Evacuation
Local Tory councillor Gary Suttle confirmed the fatalities as residents were evacuated to nearby All Saints Church. Staff were seen in tears, embracing as emergency crews worked tirelessly. The South Western Ambulance Service deployed 10 double-crewed ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team, and extra resources. Two patients were taken to Poole Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters from Dorset and Wiltshire were called in at 7:47am, sending fire crews from Swanage, Wareham, Westbourne, Poole, Dorchester, and Winchester. The scene saw a haul of fire engines, ambulances, and police vehicles, as neighbours watched in shock.
Local Church Opens Doors to Evacuees
Reverend Jo Levasier of All Saints Church confirmed carers and some residents sought refuge in the church, where they are receiving support amid the chaos. An anonymous local described the harrowing evacuation, recalling patients in wheelchairs being moved out under the watchful eyes of first responders.
Ongoing Investigation as Gas Engineers Arrive
Southern Gas Network (SGN) engineers have arrived to perform safety checks and investigate the cause. SGN spokesperson Katie Lobban said, “Our engineers are waiting for access to the building to complete safety checks. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this tragic incident.”
Gainsborough Care Home, run by Agincare, is a 48-bed facility over two floors. Agincare has yet to comment on the incident. Police, fire, and ambulance crews remain on site as investigations continue. Authorities urge the public to avoid the area and hold off on speculation until the probe is complete.
