Ex-Cranbrook Teacher Jailed for Child Sex Abuse
A former Cranbrook teacher has been locked up for sexually abusing a pupil in the 1980s. Simon Montgomery exploited his role as a boarding housemaster and science teacher at Dulwich College Preparatory School to prey on a young boy.
Groomed Victim Using School Authority
Montgomery started by making the boy stay behind after lessons, showing him explicit magazines. The abuse escalated, happening repeatedly both in the classroom and at a nearby sports facility. The victim was under his care and trust—trust Montgomery shattered.
Police Investigation Leads to Guilty Plea
Kent Police were alerted in December 2022. Following his arrest, Montgomery confessed during interviews and even named the victim without prompting. He faced charges of indecent assault, gross indecency with a child, and making indecent images found on his devices.
Sentenced to Over Three Years Behind Bars
The 70-year-old Rainham resident pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on 19 December 2024 to three years and four months in prison. He also received a sexual harm prevention order.
Detective Constable Emma Coghlan said: “Montgomery’s actions have caused lifelong damage to his victim. Thankfully, the victim showed remarkable courage to come forward. This sentence won’t erase the trauma but will hopefully offer some closure.”
“Anyone suffering abuse should know it’s never too late to report offences — police will provide full support with confidentiality and sensitivity.”
