Man Found Dead in Van From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
A man was found dead in the back of his van in Redbridge after succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning from a log burner. Michelle Catalana, 36, was discovered unresponsive inside his van on Castle Drive on November 10.
Coroner Reveals Fatal Details
At a preliminary hearing at East London Coroner’s Court in Walthamstow on December 19, Dr Shirley Radcliffe said Catalana was found cold and unresponsive, with a strong smell of carbon monoxide inside the vehicle.
“It is believed that Mr. Catalana had a log burner operating throughout the night and inhaled its fumes. There is no evidence of foul play,” Dr Radcliffe said.
The coroner couldn’t explain why Catalana spent the night just a street away from his home.
Post-Mortem Confirms Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Tests confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia from inhaling smoke and carbon monoxide. The death is officially classified as unnatural, triggering a full public inquest.
Community Warned About Carbon Monoxide Dangers
This tragic case has raised alarm about the deadly risks of carbon monoxide, especially in poorly ventilated spaces. Authorities have urged residents to use heating devices safely and to install carbon monoxide detectors.
Calls have gone out for greater public education on safely using portable heaters and log burners, as colder months loom.
