An inquest has heard that a man found dead in the back of his van in Redbridge succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a log burner.
Michelle Catalana, 36, of Evanston Gardens, was discovered unresponsive in his vehicle on Castle Drive on November 10. His death was formally examined during a preliminary inquest at East London Coroner’s Court in Walthamstow on December 19.
Circumstances of the Death
Coroner Dr. Shirley Radcliffe outlined the findings, revealing that Mr. Catalana was found in the rear of his van, cold to the touch and unresponsive. A distinct smell of carbon monoxide was detected within the van.
“It is believed that Mr. Catalana had a log burner operating throughout the night and inhaled its fumes,” Dr. Radcliffe said. “There is no evidence of foul play.”
The court has yet to determine why Mr. Catalana spent the night in his van just a street away from his home.
Post-Mortem Findings
A post-mortem examination and toxicology tests confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia caused by smoke or fume inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. The findings classify the death as unnatural, prompting the need for a full public inquest.
Inquest Proceedings
Dr. Radcliffe noted that inquests are held to investigate unnatural deaths and explore measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. A date for the full inquest has yet to be set.
Community Concerns
The incident has raised awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, particularly in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation. Local authorities have reminded residents to use heating devices safely and to install carbon monoxide detectors where applicable.
Mr. Catalana’s tragic death has prompted calls for greater public education on the safe use of portable heaters and log burners, particularly as colder months approach.
