Katherine Murrell, an emergency medical technician with the London Ambulance Service (LAS), has beaten an incredible three cancer diagnoses over 11 years. Now cancer-free, she’s thriving in her career and inspiring others with her story.
Teenage Cancer Nightmare
Katherine’s battle began at just 16 when she was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma, a deadly blood cancer. While her friends studied for GCSEs, she endured six months of gruelling daily chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the Royal Marsden. After a tough fight, she was given the all-clear – but her health journey was far from over.
Blows Keep Coming
Seven years later, Katherine found a swollen lymph node in her neck. The devastating second diagnosis? Thyroid cancer. Just before her LAS passing-out ceremony, she had surgery to remove her thyroid and affected lymph nodes.
Even after clearing cancer again, more scares followed. Borderline pre-cancerous lymph nodes were removed via keyhole surgery. Then in 2023, during a preventative double mastectomy due to risks from previous radiotherapy, doctors discovered a small breast tumour—her third cancer diagnosis.
From Survivor to Superhero
Undeterred, Katherine returned to work at LAS in early 2024. Her battles have given her a rare insight and deep empathy for patients.
“I’ve spent 11 years going to hospital appointments, and when you get that used to it, you want to give something back,” she said.
Far from holding her back, cancer has fuelled her career. Katherine calls it her “superpower.”
“Cancer hasn’t impacted my career at all—if anything, it’s enhanced it. It’s made me acutely aware of my abilities, my empathy, and my compassion.”
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future at LAS
With 30 years left in her career, Katherine is eager to embrace new roles and opportunities within LAS.
“LAS isn’t one size fits all, and I’m excited to explore different teams and pathways.”
She urges others facing hardship to see the silver linings.
“It’s not easy, but the time I spent in hospital wasn’t just horrible—it gave me exposure to medicine and clinical pathways I use every day.”
A True Tale of Grit and Growth
Katherine Murrell’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience and hope. Through every setback, she’s become stronger, proving that even the toughest battles can lead to extraordinary personal triumphs.
