Salford Smash-Up: Car Crashes Through Railway Bridge and Lands on Tracks
Rail Chaos Between Manchester and Liverpool
A dramatic crash in Salford, Greater Manchester, has brought railway services between Manchester and Liverpool to a halt. A car smashed through a railway bridge and landed upside down on the tracks below, sparking major travel disruption this morning.
Trains to Newton-le-Willows and Wigan North Western have also been suspended as emergency teams scramble to clear the scene.
Accident at Regent Road Roundabout
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) revealed the incident happened at the Regent Road roundabout near Manchester city centre. The vehicle ploughed through barriers before crashing onto the railway tracks, landing upside down.
Driver Arrested for Drink Driving
A GMP spokesperson confirmed the driver was arrested after failing a breathalyser test for alcohol. British Transport Police (BTP) say the driver was taken to hospital but is not believed to have suffered serious injuries.
Network Rail Issues Apology, Delays Expected
Network Rail apologised to passengers: “We are sorry to passengers travelling between Liverpool and Manchester today. Due to a police incident overnight involving a vehicle on the line at Salford, no trains are running.”
Regent Road reopened at 7:30 AM, but rail services are expected to remain disrupted until at least 1 PM as crews clear debris and assess damage.
Commuters are urged to check National Rail Enquiries and local train operators for real-time updates.
