A fire has severely damaged part of the North London Collegiate School (NLCS) in Cannon Drive, Edgware, prompting a major emergency response in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that a number of  fire engines and aerial ladder platform to the scene just after 2 a.m., working quickly to contain the flames and limit damage to the historic institution.

Staff on site said that the flames were very visible when they alerted the fire service

The extent of the destruction is not yet fully known, but early reports indicate that a section of the school building has suffered significant fire damage.

Emergency Services on the Scene

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said:

Crews remain on-site, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time, but a full assessment will be conducted once the fire is completely extinguished.

Shock and Concern from the NLCS Community

The school, renowned for its long-standing reputation for academic excellence and high-profile alumni, has left students, parents, and former pupils in shock. Many have taken to social media to express their concern for the school’s future.

NLCS, which was founded in 1850 by education pioneer Frances Buss, has long been considered one of the UK’s most prestigious independent schools for girls. It has educated many notable figures, including broadcaster Alice Beer, fashion journalist Anna Wintour, and author Gillian Tett.

What Happens Next?

Authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the blaze, while school administrators assess the impact on students and upcoming classes.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters responded to a fire on a school grounds in Canons Park, Harrow.

A single story boiler house at the site was destroyed by fire. One of the Brigade’s 32m ladders was sent to the scene as part of the response. There are no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade was called about the incident at 0142, and Control Officers mobilised crews from Stanmore, Mill Hill, Hendon and surrounding fire stations to the scene. Crews had the incident under control by 0358.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
