Blaze Ravages Prestigious North London Collegiate School in Early Morning Fire
Firestorm Hits Historic NLCS Campus
A major fire tore through part of the North London Collegiate School (NLCS) on Cannon Drive, Edgware, in the early hours of Tuesday. Firefighters launched a massive emergency response just after 2 a.m., battling fierce flames that severely damaged a section of this iconic institution.
London Fire Brigade Battles Flames
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) rushed several fire engines and an aerial ladder platform to the scene, working swiftly to contain the blaze. Staff on site reported the flames were highly visible, triggering the fire alarm promptly.
While the full extent of the damage remains unclear, early indications reveal significant destruction to a part of the school building. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.
Emergency Services and Investigation Underway
“Crews remain on-site, and the cause of the fire is under investigation,” said a London Fire Brigade spokesperson. “A full assessment will be conducted once the fire is completely extinguished.”
The fire drew a huge response with eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackling the blaze. Crews from Stanmore, Mill Hill, Hendon, and nearby stations all swung into action. They brought the fire under control by 3:58 a.m. The blaze destroyed a single-storey boiler house on site as well.
Shockwaves Through the NLCS Community
Founded in 1850 by education pioneer Frances Buss, NLCS boasts a stellar reputation as one of the UK’s top independent girls’ schools. Its famous alumni include broadcaster Alice Beer, fashion guru Anna Wintour, and author Gillian Tett. The fire has left students, parents, and former pupils reeling. Many took to social media to voice their shock and concern about the school’s future.
What’s Next for NLCS?
Authorities are set to launch a thorough probe into the fire’s origins. Meanwhile, school leaders are assessing the damage and planning how to minimise disruption to students and upcoming classes. The NLCS community is bracing for a challenging road ahead as clean-up and rebuilding efforts get underway.
