Man’s Jail Term Boosted for Plotting Female Genital Mutilation

Horrific Plot Exposed

A 48-year-old man, Emad Kaky, has been hit with a longer prison term after plotting to take a young girl abroad to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) and be forced into marriage. In June 2019, Kaky arranged for the child to be sent to Iraq for the brutal procedure. Thankfully, a witness uncovered the plan, helped the girl escape, and tipped off the police.

Kaky was convicted at nottingham/" title="Nottingham" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Nottingham Crown Court for conspiracy to commit FGM and forced marriage.

Sentence Slashed, Then Slammed

Originally, Kaky was handed just four and a half years behind bars on 3 October 2024. Furious at the leniency, the case was referred to the Court of Appeal. On 24 January 2025, his sentence was upped to a hefty seven years, reflecting the grim seriousness of his crime.

Government Claps Back

“FGM is a sickening crime, and this government is determined to stamp out the practice as part of our mission to halve violence against women and girls,” said Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP.

“This offender intended to inflict grotesque physical and mental suffering upon a child. The court has rightly decided to increase his sentence to reflect the severity of his crime.”

Landmark Win in the Fight Against FGM

This case marks the UK’s first-ever successful prosecution for conspiracy to commit FGM, a major victory in tackling such abuse.

“This landmark case sends a strong message to perpetrators – just because an offence has been committed somewhere else in the world does not stop you facing prosecution,” said Janine McKinney, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS East Midlands.

She added that law enforcement agencies are united in making sure FGM offenders face justice.
