Chaos at Morrisons! Armed Thief Charges Police in Wild Break-In

Armed Break-In Sparks High-Speed Police Response

In the early hours of 22 November 2024, two masked men stormed the Morrisons store on The Row, New Ash Green. Callum Knox, 38, and Damian Smith, 44, both from Southampton, smashed their way in wielding crowbars. The violent break-in triggered an intruder alarm at 1:40 am, prompting a rapid response from Kent Police.

Fierce Struggle as Police Tackle Armed Burglar

Officers arrived to find staff confronting the robbers. Smith quickly surrendered, dropping his weapon. Knox, however, went wild. With crowbar raised, he charged at officers trying to escape. A tense tussle ensued as police wrestled Knox to the floor. Despite being disarmed, Knox violently resisted and even tried to grab an officer’s Taser before he was finally cuffed. A key found nearby led officers to the suspects’ getaway car, parked close by.

Jail Time for Double Trouble

Both men faced burglary charges, with Knox also hit with assaulting two emergency workers. On 13 February 2025, Canterbury Crown Court sentenced Knox to two years and one month behind bars. Smith, who violated a previous suspended sentence, was handed an even stiffer sentence of two years and ten months.

Police Praise Brave Officers, Warn of Ongoing Danger

“Knox was determined to escape by any means, but our officers showed tenacity and courage, tackling him despite the obvious risk. Their actions ensured both men were disarmed and brought to justice,” said Chief Inspector Mark Stubberfield.

“This incident highlights the dangers our officers face daily and underscores our commitment to protecting the public from repeat offenders like Knox and Smith. Career criminals like these cause immense harm to local communities and businesses, and we are determined to hold them accountable.”

Community on Edge, Police Stay Vigilant

The botched burglary rattled residents and raised alarm over local shop security in New Ash Green. Officials promise heightened patrols and swift action against future threats. Kent Police urge the public to stay alert and report suspicious activity immediately.
