Plymouth Acid Attack: Police Urge Public to Rely on Official Sources Amid Misinformation

Detectives investigating a brutal acid attack in Plymouth are urging the public to rely only on official sources after misinformation about the incident spread online.

Police are continuing their investigation into the serious assault, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, February 21, when two men forced their way into a Lipson Road property and attacked the occupant, a man in his 30s.

It has since been confirmed that acid was used to inflict injuries. The victim remains in a serious condition in hospital.

Misinformation Circulating on Social Media

Since the attack, false claims have surfaced on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), alleging that a 14-year-old girl was injured during the incident.

Devon and Cornwall Police have categorically denied this, stating that there is no truth to the claims. Additionally, speculation regarding the suspects’ identities has also been dismissed as unverified and incorrect.

Detective Superintendent Jon Bancroft addressed the misinformation, stating:

“We are working tirelessly to investigate this brutal attack which took place one week ago. Our detectives and partner agencies have been following leads both in Plymouth and further afield to try and bring to justice those responsible.

“This was an isolated and targeted attack, which we believe is related to organised crime.

“We have been made aware of concerning speculation which is being circulated online and on social media which simply isn’t true. The facts of the matter are outlined in this press release, and we urge the public to look to official sources for the facts surrounding this incident.”

Ongoing Search for Suspects

Officers are still working to locate the two suspects, who are described as black males in their early 20s. A previous police appeal was issued in Wiltshire, but detectives now believe the men are no longer in that area.
