Disqualified Biker Locked Up After Fatal Hit-and-Run on Elderly Pedestrian
Banned Rider Runs Down Grandma on Busy East Preston Road
A disqualified motorcyclist has been jailed for causing a deadly crash that killed 81-year-old Janet Jacob in East Preston. Kieran Shaw, 21, struck Mrs Jacob on October 25, 2022, as she crossed the B2140 Worthing Road. Shaw, already banned from driving for dangerous behaviour, failed to spot the elderly pedestrian and hit her with his Yamaha Tracer 700.
Speeding and Lies: Shaw’s Dangerous Recklessness Exposed
At Lewes Crown Court, it emerged Shaw blatantly flouted the law by riding despite his ban. He even fed false details to police when stopped during his driving disqualification. Witnesses saw the powerful bike collide with Mrs Jacob, with investigations showing Shaw was speeding between 27mph and 38mph in a 30mph zone.
Shockingly, Shaw admits he was listening to music through a Bluetooth speaker in his helmet but denies it distracted him. The judge slammed him for choosing a bike too powerful for his age, calling his actions reckless.
Family Mourns, Calls Shaw ‘Arrogant and Lawless’
Mrs Jacob’s family called the crash a “harrowing ordeal” and described her as a loving mother and grandmother. They slammed Shaw’s conduct in a heartbreaking statement: “Shaw is an arrogant and lawless individual with an utter disregard for safety and a blatant disregard for the law.”
Prison and a Lengthy Driving Ban for Shaw
Shaw, a former roofer from Trinity Way, Littlehampton, was sentenced to three years and nine months behind bars. He also received a further six-and-a-half-year driving ban.
Sussex Police welcomed the custodial sentence, warning: “By riding while disqualified, Shaw showed no regard for other road users. Had he not been riding that day, Mrs Jacob’s family would not have endured this painful ordeal.”
This grim case is a stark warning about the deadly risks of ignoring driving bans and riding dangerously on our roads.
