Drink-Driver Crashes into Riverside Railings in Cambridge

An uninsured and unlicensed driver crashed his car into riverside railings while way over the drink-drive limit. Muhammed Aavesh, 23, from Priory Road, Cambridge, was banned from driving for 14 months after pleading guilty to drink driving, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance.

Crash Caught on CCTV After 3am Collision

The smash happened just before 3am on 13 February. Police on patrol heard a loud crash along Riverside. When they arrived, two parked cars were damaged, and a white Hyundai was left hanging dangerously over the river after smashing through metal railings.

Aavesh was found at the scene but initially denied driving. After refusing a roadside breath test, he was arrested. In custody, he gave a breath test reading of 49 microgrammes per 100ml of breath — over the legal limit of 35.

CCTV later confirmed Aavesh was behind the wheel moments before the crash.

Judge Slaps 14-Month Ban and £50 Fine

At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on 6 March, Aavesh admitted the offences. He was handed a 14-month driving ban and fined £50.

PC Olivia Webster, who led the investigation, warned:

“Even a small amount of alcohol can slow your reactions, blur your judgement, and turn a routine drive into a deadly risk for the driver and everyone else on the road. Aavesh is very lucky to walk away uninjured on this occasion and we hope it is a lesson learned that drink driving is just not worth the risk.”

Police Urge Public to Report Drink and Drug Drivers

Images from the crash scene show the Hyundai teetering on the riverbank and mangled railings. Cambridgeshire Constabulary urges anyone who suspects drink or drug driving to call their confidential hotline 24/7 on 0800 032 0845.
