Second Migrant Dies Crossing Channel in 48 Hours as Crisis Deepens

Tragedy Strikes Near Gravelines

A second migrant has drowned attempting the perilous English Channel crossing in just two days, French authorities confirm. The latest disaster unfolded early Thursday near Gravelines in northern France, when an overloaded boat carrying about 80 migrants ran into trouble after leaving Dunkirk Wednesday night.

The French coastguard launched a rescue around 3am, pulling three people from the water. Twelve others asked to be evacuated. One passenger was found unconscious; emergency crews tried to resuscitate but he died at the scene.

Survivors were taken to Gravelines port for medical care, while the coastguard kept a close watch on the struggling vessel’s onward path towards the UK.

Investigation Underway

The Dunkirk public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation to uncover the circumstances behind the fatal incident. This comes 24 hours after another migrant died attempting the same crossing near Equihen-Plage on Wednesday morning. Two were rescued from that incident, one suffering hypothermia; the other was in cardiac arrest and couldn’t be saved.

Migrant Numbers Surge Despite Dangers

  • Home Office reports: 289 people reached the UK on Wednesday via five small boat crossings.
  • So far this year, around 4,684 migrants have risked the Channel crossing.
  • The French coastguard has recorded four deaths during rescue efforts since the start of 2025.

The Channel remains one of the world’s deadliest maritime migration routes. Overcrowded boats, freezing waters, and hazardous conditions continue to put lives at grave risk.
