A deadly shooting rocked Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, late Saturday night. At least one person was killed and 11 others injured near a bustling tourist spot, sending shockwaves through the community.
Gunfire Erupts Near Ripley’s Mirror Maze
Just before midnight, gunshots rang out along busy North Ocean Boulevard, forcing tourists and families to scramble for cover. The chaos unfolded close to the popular Ripley’s Mirror Maze attraction, confirmed Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.
Shooter Shot Dead by Police
Police identified 18-year-old Jerrius Davis from Bennettsville as the shooter. He was fatally shot by an officer responding to the scene. The officer remained unhurt and acted swiftly against what Myrtle Beach Police called an “active threat.”
Witnesses Describe Horror and Panic
Michael Howard, 30, visiting from North Carolina, said: “I will be forever traumatised after seeing the shooter gunned down and a woman hit in the knees during the chaos.”
Scenes of terror and confusion swept through the area as locals and holidaymakers took shelter in nearby hotels and businesses. North Ocean Boulevard between Eighth and 16th Avenues stayed sealed off into Sunday afternoon as investigations continued.
Investigation Underway, Community Reacts
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) launched a full investigation, including reviewing the officer’s use of force, said police spokesperson Randolph Angotti. Crime scene tape blocked off several blocks, including near Peaches Corner and Ripley’s Crazy Golf.
Myrtle Beach Police offered their “prayers and deepest sympathies to everyone affected.” South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace took to social media, stating:
“Devastated by the tragic shooting in Myrtle Beach. Our hearts are torn apart for the victims and their families. South Carolina stands strong, and we will not tolerate violence of any sort in our communities. God bless the first responders on the scene.”
