Firefighters Battle Moorland Blaze at Errwood Reservoir Amid Bank Holiday Heat

Fire crews have been working through the early hours to tackle a large moorland fire near Errwood Reservoir in Derbyshire.

Emergency services were called at 04:12 this morning (Saturday, 4 May) to assist multiple fire stations across Derbyshire in containing the blaze.

The fire comes as the UK heads into a Bank Holiday weekend with glorious sunshine and rising temperatures, increasing the risk of wildfires across the countryside.

Authorities are warning that high temperatures have left grass and vegetation tinder-dry, meaning even a small spark — from something like a discarded cigarette or an unattended campfire — could quickly escalate into a major incident.

In a public safety message, firefighters highlighted the severe impact of moorland fires:

Fire services are urging the public to act responsibly:

Please be sensible and help us protect our beautiful countryside. Be cautious with barbecues, campfires, and any open flames.

The BeMoorAware campaign is being widely promoted to encourage residents and visitors to think carefully and prevent further fire risks during the ongoing dry spell.

Authorities remain at the scene and are monitoring conditions closely.
