Youth Unemployment Crisis Winds Up in UK: “Lost Generation” Warning

A top UK education charity has slammed the alarm on a growing youth unemployment crisis. Education & Employers warn urgent action is needed now or risk creating a “lost generation” of young Brits stuck out of work.

OECD Report Shows Career Aspirations Out of Step With Reality

The warning comes alongside the OECD’s latest global report, The State of Global Teenage Career Preparation. It reveals a huge mismatch between what young people want to do and which jobs will actually be available.

According to Office for National Statistics (ONS) data, almost 1 million UK youths (987,000) are now NEET — not in education, employment, or training — the highest figure in more than ten years.

Meanwhile, UK employers struggle to fill vacancies in critical sectors like healthcare, skilled trades, and digital tech. This fuels a deeper skills shortage and growing reliance on overseas workers.

Stark Mismatch: Digital & Green Boom, But Teen Dreams Stuck in Past

The OECD highlights booming jobs in digital, data science, and green energy since 2000. Yet, teenagers’ career goals have barely budged in 25 years.

Nick Chambers, CEO of Education & Employers, said: “We 123 are crucial. The earlier children connect with real-world careers, the better prepared they are to follow those paths.”

Scaling Up: Calls to Reach 5 Million Young Brits

Education & Employers want national backing to boost Inspiring the Future so it:

  • Reaches 1 million young people each year initially,
  • Then grows to help 5 million annually to tackle the soaring NEET crisis.

Chambers urged: “Now is the time for action to ensure young people fully understand the opportunities 1 to them—and to build the workforce that will power a vibrant UK economy.”
