Hackney Man Found Guilty of Raping Woman in Kingston Churchyard
Mohammad Idriss, 18, from Pembury Road, Hackney, was convicted at Kingston Crown Court on Thursday, 16 March. He had already admitted to possessing a Class B drug, theft, and fraud linked to the same vile attack.
Attack in Kingston Town Centre
On 23 July 2022, just after midnight, Idriss was spotted loitering in Kingston Town Centre. He approached a woman and brutally raped her in a nearby churchyard off Clarence Street.
He then stole two of her bank cards and used them to buy food and drink at various shops around Kingston.
Swift Police Action and Evidence
The victim reported the rape that very day, prompting detectives to launch an urgent investigation. CCTV footage showed Idriss approaching the victim. Forensic tests confirmed him as the attacker.
Police arrested him at his Hackney home on 26 July 2022. He refused to comment during interviews and was charged and remanded shortly after.
Support for Victim and Upcoming Sentencing
An Independent Sexual Violence Adviser (ISVA) offered specialist support throughout the investigation and trial. Special court arrangements meant the victim gave evidence with only the judge and barristers present – without seeing Idriss.
Detective Constable Troy Sampson, lead investigator, said: “Mohammad Idriss is a dangerous individual who targeted an innocent woman. His actions have caused serious, lasting harm. I’m pleased with today’s verdict and comforted knowing he’s behind bars and can’t hurt anyone else.”
“Reporting rape can be daunting, but we offer full support and thorough investigations for all victims.”
Idriss will be sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, 19 May.
