Blackheath Fireworks Set to Light Up Lewisham This November

The beloved Blackheath Fireworks are making a dazzling comeback on Friday, November 1 after a six-year break. Lewisham Council has officially confirmed the return of this iconic South East London tradition, which last exploded onto the scene back in 2018.

Cancelled for Years, Now Back with a Bang

The firework show was shelved after 2018 due to funding woes, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis hitting council budgets hard. Lewisham Council cut funding in 2019 to focus on essential services, leaving fans disappointed.

A community fundraiser gave hope for a 2020 revival, but pandemic restrictions forced another cancellation. However, thanks to fresh external funding and private event partners, the sky is finally set to sparkle again this November.

The event is planned from 4pm to 10.30pm and is expected to attract up to 30,000 people, pending final licensing approval. It promises to be the biggest night out in Lewisham this autumn.

What’s on the Cards for 2024

Top London event organiser Slammin Events is pulling the strings this year. The show will feature:

  • A spectacular high-end fireworks display
  • Live and recorded music performances
  • Thrilling dance acts
  • Tasty food, drink, and craft stalls
  • Alcohol sales from 4pm to 11pm

Council Cites Tough Choices but Cheers Return

Lewisham Council has been upfront about the tough decisions behind past cancellations. They said:

“During a cost-of-living crisis, we cannot justify spending money on community fireworks for just one night over vital services needed throughout the year.”

But with the sparks set to fly again, the council hopes the event will restore a “much-needed sense of joy and community celebration” after years of economic strain.
