Man Who Killed Elderly Sister in East Devon Gets Hospital Order
A 68-year-old man who brutally killed his 70-year-old sister at their family home in East Devon has been sentenced to a hospital order. Richard Law, from Newton Poppleford, admitted manslaughter by diminished responsibility at Exeter Crown Court on 24 July.
Chilling Phone Call: “I’ve Killed My Sister”
The violent incident happened in January when emergency services were called to the home after Law himself calmly phoned police.
“I’ve killed my sister, so I need you to come.”
Officers found Judith Law upstairs with a severe head injury. Despite attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hammer Attack and Mental Health Struggles
During arrest and while being transported to custody, Law confessed to striking his sister with a hammer. He revealed his mental health had deteriorated significantly prior to the attack.
A police spokesperson said:
“Friends and neighbours of Judith have endured a tragic loss in exceptionally sad circumstances. I would like to thank them for their support throughout this investigation. My thoughts, and those of the entire investigation team, are with them at this time.”
