A violent thug has been locked up for eight years after launching a savage, unprovoked assault on two Met Police officers.
mark-england/scotland-england/”>scotland/”>scotland/”>Mark Weatherley, 43, from Sidcup, was sentenced at england/Woolwichwoolwich/”>Woolwich Crown Court on 26 September. He admitted two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent and will serve an additional four years on licence upon release.
Horrific Assault Leaves Officers Seriously Injured
The female officers, both part of the South East Command Unit response team, suffered serious injuries and are still off work recovering.
Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry said: “This was an utterly horrific unprovoked attack on two officers who had attended the address in response to reports of a disturbance.
“As they tried to arrest Weatherley, he went berserk—punching and stamping on them repeatedly.”
“I’m immensely grateful to the officers who bravely came to their colleagues’ aid, providing urgent medical help and quickly arresting Weatherley.
“Had they not stepped in, I’m certain Weatherley would have continued his brutal assault. The sheer hatred and violence he showed was deeply shocking and distressing.”
“This case is a harsh reminder of the dangers Met officers face daily while Keepingkeeping London safe.”
Violence Erupts During Disturbance Call
- The attack happened around midday on 29 June at Weatherley’s home in Sidcup.
- Police were initially attending to a female victim when Weatherley returned to the scene and became threatening.
- Despite officers’ efforts to calm him, Weatherley lashed out violently.
- He knocked one officer unconscious with a punch to the head, then beat and kicked the second officer while she was down.
- Weatherley continued attacking and verbally abusing the officers until backup arrived to arrest him.
- He chillingly told cops he would have done worse if the officers had been men.
Both women were rushed to hospital with serious injuries, including multiple facial fractures and a broken nose.
Thug Shows No Remorse in Custody
Weatherley’s aggression continued in custody. He was so violent investigators had to interview him through his cell door. He threatened officers and, when shown bodycam footage of the attack, coldly said the officers “deserved it” and that he would do it again.
He pleaded guilty to the charges on 29 July.
James Bowker, Senior Crown Prosecutor, said: “We built a watertight case using video, medical reports, and witness statements to reflect how serious Weatherley’s crimes were.
“Police officers do a tough, brave job protecting communities and must be able to work without fear. Today’s sentencing shows the law will always protect emergency workers.”
