French ATC Strikes Set to Wreck Ryanair Flights – 600 Cancellations Loom

Ryanair is slashing 600 flights next week as French air traffic control (ATC) staff stage strikes from October 7 to 10. Over 100,000 passengers will be left stranded or scrambling for alternatives.

It’s not just France in trouble – any flight crossing French skies is at risk. UK travellers jetting off to hotspots like Spain, Italy, and Greece should brace for chaos.

Michael O’Leary Sounds the Alarm: £20 Million Hit

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary slammed the strike, warning: “About 100,000 passengers will have their flights cancelled needlessly next Wednesday and Thursday.”

He revealed the cost could hit a whopping £20 million – expenses likely to be passed on to customers.

“On any day, we fly 3,500 flights. About 900 cross French airspace. When French ATC strikes, we cancel around 600 flights daily,” O’Leary explained.

He added: “Unions have the right to strike, but they should hit local French flights, not UK to Spain routes.”

More Airlines Feel the Pain – BA and easyJet Warned

Ryanair isn’t alone. British Airways and easyJet warn their customers to brace for disruption. EasyJet says it’s “monitoring the situation” but hasn’t pulled any flights yet.

The SNCTA union blamed poor management for the strikes, which were postponed from September to now cover three days in October.

Your Traveller Rights: Compensation and Refunds Explained

  • Delayed or cancelled? Know your rights: If your flight arrives over three hours late, UK law entitles you to compensation.
  • Refund or rebook: Airlines must offer a full refund or alternative flight for trips to or from the UK.
  • Exceptions apply: No compensation for cancellations caused by strikes or extreme weather – deemed “extraordinary circumstances.”
  • Travel insurance: May cover delays of 8–12 hours but rarely full cancellations. Always keep proof of delays for claims.

Ryanair even launched ATCruinedourholiday.com, a dedicated site for furious passengers to vent their frustration.

Strike Storm Sweeping Europe Hits Greek Transport Too

Brit holidaymakers can’t catch a break. Just this week, a 24-hour strike shut down all public transport in Greece – buses, taxis, and flights were grounded nationwide.
