Police arrest Man after School Girl is Followed in Portsmouth

Police in Portsmouth have this evening (Wednesday, October 5) arrested a 41-year-old man after receiving a report of a suspicious man following a 14-year-old girl on Kent Road just before 4pm today. The girl was walking home from Portsmouth High School for Girls in Southsea when a man tried to repeatedly stop and talk to her. Three passers-by noticed the man behaving suspiciously and called police at 3.53pm. The man was subsequently arrested and is currently in police custody. On Monday, October 3 we received a report involving a 15-year-old girl also walking home from Portsmouth High School for Girls. The girl was walking along Pembroke Road when she felt a man begin to follow her. The girl reported the incident to her parents when she arrived home that afternoon. Both incidents are under investigation. Police are working closely with school staff to ensure children feel safe walking to and from school in the coming days, when we will be carrying out reassurance patrols at school finishing time. Officers would like parents and teenagers alike to be alert, but not alarmed and report anything suspicious to 101 or 999 appropriately.
