A 55-year-old man was brutally attacked in Burgess Park in a shocking homophobic assault in the early hours of Saturday, 14 May.

Victim Assaulted in Burgess Park

The victim was walking with two friends around 1:40am when an unknown man shouted homophobic abuse at him before striking him on the head. The attacker then made a swift getaway on foot along Albany Road.

Police Hunt Suspect Caught on CCTV

Emergency services rushed the injured man to hospital. Thankfully, his injuries are not life-threatening.

Police are now desperate to trace a young man seen on CCTV walking along Albany Road shortly after the attack. Described as possibly in his early 20s, the suspect was wearing a stud earring and carried a JD Sports plastic string bag on his back. Although his face isn’t visible, officers hope someone will recognise him.

Detectives are combing through CCTV to find more leads. They are urging anyone with information to call 101, quoting CAD 650/14may. Alternatively, callers can contact Crimestoppers to remain anonymous.

Commander Dr Alison Heydari said: “Tackling violent crime is the Met’s top priority. This sort of violence, especially fuelled by homophobic hatred, will not be tolerated. Our officers are working fast to identify and bring the attacker to justice.”
