Met Police Officer Arrested for Leaking Secrets to Journalist
Cop Charged Over Data Leak
A serving Met Police officer, Matthew Olive, 26, is under fire for allegedly illegally accessing police databases and handing sensitive info to a journalist. The court heard Olive faces five counts of misconduct in public office, tied to offences between December 29, 2022, and June 22, 2023.
The journalist linked to the case is named as Rebecca Tidy.
Court Drama Unfolds at Southwark
Olive was due to enter pleas at Southwark Crown Court today, but proceedings were abruptly adjourned. Prosecutor Dickon Reid told the court:
“The defendant was a serving Metropolitan Police officer charged with five counts of misconduct in a public office.
The Allegations: Breaking the Law to Spill Secrets
Olive allegedly abused his position by unlawfully diving into confidential police systems and sharing info with Tidy. This is a clear breach of trust and legal duty for any officer.
Serious Charges, Serious Consequences
Misconduct in public office is no joke — it can carry up to life imprisonment. The case exposes worrying loopholes in police data protection and the misuse of official resources.
What’s Next?
A new court date is expected soon. Neither Olive nor Tidy have commented on the scandal. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police remain tight-lipped but are expected to respond as the case develops.
