Bent Bookies Cashier Cheats £3,870 Robbery – But Dodges Jail
A crooked bookmakers’ cashier let her own dad swipe nearly £4,000 in a fake robbery stunt – and barely got a slap on the wrist.
£3,870 Stolen in Sham Stick-Up
Chevvine Darling, 28, from colindale/" title="Colindale" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Colindale, helped her father Anthony Whyte pull off a staged robbery at Ladbrokes in Edgware back in October 2016. Whyte, 46, stormed the shop waving a threatening note demanding cash with no “tricks or buzzers.” Darling handed over £3,870, then reported a stranger had robbed the shop.
Feds Sniff Out Family Plot
Flying Squad cops quickly caught up with Whyte in March 2017 after linking him to the scene and his phone data. The investigation cracked open when they tracked calls between Whyte and one of the cashiers. It turned out the accomplice was his own daughter, Darling.
Darling was busted at home weeks later. Phone analysis showed she was in contact with her “dad” throughout the day, and she’d also broken company rules by keeping too much cash in the safe – making the heist easier.
Judge Lets Daughter Off – Father Gets Jail
At Guildford Crown Court, Darling was convicted of conspiracy to steal and perverting justice. She got 21 months suspended for two years and 200 hours’ community service – meaning no jail time.
Her father Whyte didn’t fare so well. Pleading guilty to theft, he got 15 months for this job plus another 21 months for a separate Ladbrokes robbery where he snatched over £400 in December 2016. That sentence runs concurrently, plus a 30-month driving ban.
“Chevvine Darling abused her position of trust to allow her father to steal a significant sum,” said Detective Constable Emma Butcher. “The other cashier, believing it was a real robbery, suffered unnecessary fear and upset. The jail sentences reflect the serious consequences of these offences.”
